Bepaalde industriële productie- en verwerkingsprocessen kunnen een gevaar vormen voor de vorming van ontvlambare of explosieve atmosferen, deze kunnen worden veroorzaakt door ontvlambare dampen, gassen of stoffen die zich vermengen met lucht om een gevaarlijke, brandbare wolk te vormen.

De betreffende gevaarlijke locaties vereisen veilige instrumenten om het risico van ontsteking en explosie te verkleinen. Wereldwijd zijn er verschillende internationale certificeringsnormen die de vereisten voor apparatuur voor explosiegevaarlijke zones definiëren, e. g. UL Klasse 1, IECEx en ATEX.

Gevaarlijke locaties - Overzicht van klassen, divisies en zones

Class/Div

De Class/Div richtlijn is belangrijk voor Noord-Amerika en Canada. Er zijn drie klassen voor gevaarlijke zones die verwijzen naar het type gevaar:

  • Class 1: het gevaar is ontvlambare damp.
  • Class 2: het gevaar is ontvlambaar stof.
  • Class 3: het gevaar is een ontvlambare vezel of andere ‘vliegassen’.


Verder verwijzen divisies en zones naar de constantheid en/of het niveau van het gevaar:

  • Division 1 of Zone 0: het gevaar is continu.
  • Division 1 of Zone 1: het gevaar is met tussenpozen aanwezig.
  • Division 2 of Zone 2: het gevaar is alleen aanwezig onder abnormale omstandigheden.

IECEx

Een IECEx-conformiteitsverklaring bevestigt dat een monster van het Ex-product, zoals beschreven in de verklaring, onafhankelijk is getest en blijkt te voldoen aan de internationale normen zoals vermeld in de verklaring. Bovendien bevestigt de verklaring dat de productiefaciliteit is gecontroleerd om te verifiëren dat het kwaliteitssysteem van de fabrikant voldoet aan IECEx-vereisten.

ATEX

De ATEX-richtlijn (ATmosphères EXplosibles) is belangrijk voor Europa (EU-richtlijn 94/9/EG). Hierin wordt beschreven welke apparatuur en werkomgeving zijn toegestaan in een omgeving met een explosieve atmosfeer:

  • Zone 0: een zone waarin continu, gedurende lange perioden of regelmatig een explosieve atmosfeer aanwezig is die bestaat uit een mengsel van lucht met gevaarlijke stoff en in de vorm van gas, damp of nevel.
  • Zone 1: een zone waarin onder normale omstandigheden waarschijnlijk af en toe een explosieve atmosfeer aanwezig is die bestaat uit een mengsel van lucht met gevaarlijke stoff en in de vorm van gas, damp of nevel.
  • Zone 2: een zone waarin een explosieve atmosfeer die bestaat uit een mengsel van lucht met gevaarlijke stoff en in de vorm van gas, damp of nevel onwaarschijnlijk is of, als deze zich toch voordoet, slechts kort optreedt.
